“Why Am I Here?”
is Dolores’s first children’s book that was published August
2011. The book is the first of a series.
She wishes to encourage young children
to embrace themselves and realize how special they are because they
are born for a purpose. Dolores
Mitchell,
have always had a passion for children. Even as a young child, she loved and cared for the children in her neighborhood.
Today she has a desire to affect children around the world with this
little book. She wants our young children to realize their value
early. Her message is simple, but profound “God
Made Me Special.”

USA Best Book Awards
KBN: How
do you promote kids and reading?
DM: I
encourage parents and grandparents to read to their children as
infants. If parents show love and enthusiasm about books and
reading, then children will have that same love and enthusiasm. I
believe children learn what they are taught. Instill the love of
reading early in life. (follow me on twitter: @catwhyamihere)
KBN: Tell
us about your website?
DM: The
website is bright and fun. It has a Parent Nook with questions to
ask their children. It also reminds parents that children learn what
they are taught. There are pictures of fun events that I have
hosted. I encourage comments.
KBN: Will
you be doing any book tours?
DM: Would
love to, but nothing scheduled at this time.
KBN: What
are your thoughts on the new technology for reading a book?
DM: In
today’s society we love to be entertained and the new technology is
excellent for that purpose. Because everyone has access to iPhone, iPads, and computers; parents can choose to educate and entertain
their children at any time. I still believe in physical books for
children. A book is something they can hold and touch. New
technology should be used, but there should be a balance.
KBN: What
advice do you have for parents on getting their kids reading?
DM: I
would like parents to read to their children because this is so
important for mental development. Start young, read, read, read.
Reading is fundamental to living a successful life.
KBN: Tell
us about your book(s) and illustrations.
DM: The
book is an easy reader about an orange Cat wondering why he is here
and why he was born. Cat takes an adventure through the barnyard
searching for his purpose. The illustrators have done an excellent
job using bright and colorful illustrations of animals. The book has
a powerful message that should be instilled in our children at a
young age and the illustrations are memorable.
KBN: How
long did it take you to get this idea to where it is now?
DM: The
story was inspired during a Sunday morning service. The inspiration
was so great, I wrote my first version that same day. It took
several revisions, but the end result is a book I am very proud of.
KBN: What
will kids love most about your book(s)?
DM: The
book is a fun book. They will remember the illustrations because
they are bright and fun. Children will actually feel the happiness
and sadness with Cat as he takes his journey. The illustrations and
words will enable young children to gasp the words and concept
quickly.
Real
animals will be a constant reminder of the message that “I Am
Special”.
KBN: What
will parents and teachers love most about your book(s)?
DM: They
will love the positive message that will be remembered for a
lifetime. I have read other children books and read books to my
children that I thought was a good story. But those stories were
written to entertain. My story has a message that should entertain,
encourage and always be remembered.
Parents
will love it because the book can be a constant reminder to their
children that they are special.
KBN: What's
your next project?
DM: Presently
I am completing my second book. Titled: Lost but Found. Cat’s
adventure continues as he experiences life issues that should be
discussed with our children.

Review:
Many of us ask the questions “Why Am I Here?” We each have a purpose in life. We are all very special in our own unique way.
Cat is curious about why he is here and why God made him. Cat lives with Farmer and his wife on a farm. Cat sees how Farmer pets and plays with Dog, and realizes that Dog is Farmer's best friend. Cat sees Farmer feed the chickens which in turn lay eggs for Farmer and his wife. Cat realizes that God made the chickens special. Cat follows Farmer all around and can see why Horse and Sheep are special too. It's not until the end of the day that Cat learns how special he really is and why.
Mitchell has shared a warm story that young readers will understand. Simple sentences and familiar characters will help readers answer this question for themselves. Parents will find that this story is a great tool to open up dialogue for helping little ones better understand the meaning of life and why God made them so unique and special.
