Review:
Misha is an artist who
lives alone, but does have his old cow Klara. One cold and windy night a cat
wandered into the barn. When discovered by Misha he became a caring friend to
the cat and named her Mazel. The two shared Misha’s meager party as they
prepared to celebrate Hanukkah. Misha was too poor to own candles to light for
the holiday, so instead he painted candles each day for his menorah art. One
day a peddler came to visit and loved all of Misha’s art, and he was also the original
owner of Mazel. The peddler traded money for Misha’s art. What do you think
happened with Mazel?
Author Joel Edward Stein
has created a gentle story of kindness. Young readers will see that a holiday
can still be a happy one even when you don’t have much. It also speaks to how
each person has something to offer and share. Easy to read sentence structure
and beautifully illustrated, this story shares Jewish culture and the Hanukkah
celebration.
