Kristi's Book Nook is proud to present Mom's Choice Award-winning author Liliana Tommasini.  Her new picture book teaches how kids can have a can-do attitude but that it is alright to ask a parent for help. Take a moment to learn more about this amazing author and her book. Take a look at my review of Octavia Can Do It!

Kristi's Book Nook Author Highlight Interview:

KBN: I love that your characters are bi-racial. Tell us about your book and the idea behind it.

LT: I wrote Octavia Can Do It! for my grandchildren and they are bi-racial. I wanted to write a book where they could identify with the characters.

KBN: How long did it take you to get this idea to where it is now?

LT: I started to get the idea when I saw Octavia, who was two or three years old at the time, wanting to help my daughter bake. It took me a year to write and have the book published.

KBN: Do you bake often with your grandchildren?

LT: We bake cookies and cupcakes together and have fun making a mess!

KBN: What will kids love most about your book(s)?

LT: Parents and teachers will appreciate the message that I want to convey to children that
it’s okay to want to do things on your own, but it’s also okay to ask for help if you need it.

KBN: What's your next project?

LT: I am already mapping out an idea for my second book.

KBN: Besides writing books for children how else do you promote reading and literacy?

LT: I was a volunteer for the Adult Literacy Program at one of the local high schools. I read to my children and now I read to my grandchildren.

KBN: Will you be doing any book tours?

LT: I plan to do one or two virtual book tours and participate in author events at our local bookstore and library.

KBN: What are your thoughts on the new technology for reading or listening to a book?

LT: Although there are benefits to using technology for reading and listening to books (saving space and time), I think children will have more fun and positive reading experience when they hold a book in their hands. I still prefer reading from an actual book I can hold.

KBN: What advice do you have for parents to get their kids reading?

LT: Let your children see you read. Read their favorite books to them and read with them. Ask them questions about what they read. Bring them to a library and let them pick out a book to bring home to read.
