Charlie Bumpers is in Mrs.
Burke’s fourth grade class. He liked her just fine but she had a lot of strict
rules. Every year Mrs. Burke’s class presented a play. There were props
costumes and the like. Parents would even come to see. This year’s play was The
Sorcerer’s Castle. Charlie wanted to be the evil sorcerer Kragon but instead he
was assigned the Really Nice Gnome part. And, on top of that, he had a lot of
lines to learn. Charlie attempted to trade with some of his willing classmates
but Mrs. Burke wouldn’t allow it.
Charlie spoke with his mother
who encouraged him to take on this big role, but Charlie was determined to make
a change. He and Tommy, a classmate, devised a plan to make the story humorous.
The plan was to add some new lines and hopefully get the approval of Mrs.
Burke. Will their plan work or will Charlie get stuck being the really boring
nice gnome?
Author Bill Harley has
created a hilarious story built just for boys. This quick easy read has heart
and the characters are completely relatable and loveable. Black and white
illustrations can be found throughout the pages and help keep the story
intriguing. Parents, teachers and caregivers could present this as a read-aloud
project.
