Review:
There are lots of stories
regarding Holy Mary, the Mother of God. This story is regarding an Indian
farmer named Juan Diego. He was on his way to a Catholic parish in Mexico City
when he had an encounter with the Holy Mary. He was given a task to ask the
Bishop to build a big church. When Juan told the Bishop what he had seen the
Bishop did not believe him and asked for a sign. Juan shared with him Castilian
roses in bloom, which was impossible since it was winter. The Bishop had his
proof and obeyed the request to build a big church in honor of the Holy Mary,
the Mother of God.
Author and illustrator Demi
shares with young readers the historic events that took place in 1531. Readers
will learn about the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes and how he conquered
the great Aztec Empire. Readers will also learn of the church built on the hill
of Tepeyac and the powerful image of Our Lady of Guadalupe and how millions of
visitors still visit the church today. Parents and teachers who are Catholic
will truly appreciate this story and even those who are not can share this
history.
