Review:
In 1801 Judah Touro looked
out at the Boston Harbor when he arrived in America. He thought about all of
his goods that would be sold in his new store once he settled in New Orleans.
He made many friends and money too, with his new shop. In 1812 there was a war
and Judah volunteered to deliver ammunition to soldiers and was eventually
injured. When he saw the toll, the war had taken on the people he knew he
needed to help, and he had the money to do it. He helped people in silence because
he didn’t want to be famous.
Parents and teachers can
share this story of Jewish culture and history and how one-man freed slaves by
buying out their masters. He left money to hospitals and orphanages in his
will. Illustrations in grays, blacks and browns depict the era and enhance the
story.
