Sam is too young to deal with the problems she has. Her parents died and her brother Darby is often sick with fever. Not only that Sam also has to care for her aunt who isn’t always in her right mind and should be taking care of them. She is only twelve with the burden of her world on her shoulders. On a weird stormy night, she was at her wits end and a lightening strike hurled her to the ground where she fell through a large crack in the earth to the Under-Under world. 

Sam crawls her way through mucky garbage smelling mud out into this new world. She meets Tonya who is the granddaughter of the Great Hildinski, now dead, he used to rule now his wife does. With the insight of Tonya, Sam is realizing she is stuck in this world. Her world is gray and dingy, but this world is sunny and clean. At the palace where the Great Hildinski resides there are wolves and magic. Hildinski is large, scary and old. She accuses Sam of stealing part of their sun and won’t let her go home. Hildinski presents Darby and Gemini the family cat, who just happened to follow Sam down the mucky crack. Hildinski suggest three lessons Sam must master in order to get home. 

In the midst of navigating this new world Sam is once again responsible for not just getting herself home but her brother too. While in the Under-Under world Sam and Darby find themselves staying in the home with Boyo and his family. With the help of Tonya she learns that there is a map in the Hildinski sanctuary that can possibly get her home. The friends also discover that there are bad men trying to steal the water from that world. Is Sam somehow connected to all of this? Can the team of friends uncover this sinister plot? Most importantly is Hildinski involved or the cruel ruler, in Sam’s world above? 

Author P.S. Whatever has created a three-dimensional read. There is the life and growth of the main character, the world above and the world below. Each offering suspense and curiosity to how it all can exist in a parallel fashion. The characters are interesting and would be very relatable to kids in our current climate. The chapters are short but packed full of adventure. The spooky illustrations found throughout the chapters provide a surreal peak in this world. Kids will be engaged and can try to solve the riddle of the story. Parents and teachers will find this to be a perfect read-a-loud story with discussion regarding pollution in the air and in the water. The environmental undertones will increase discussion and problem solving for readers who are interested in saving our planet.
