Kamala Devi Harris was born
in Oakland, California. Her mother was from India and her father from Jamaica.
Her parents marched for civil rights and voting rights. Harris went to college
at Howard University and graduated from law school at the University of
California.

were being the first woman, Black American and South Asian elected Vice President.
She was the first Black person and woman to serve as attorney general in
California. She was the first Black woman and south Asian to serve as district
attorney in San Francisco. She was the first Indian American to serve in the
United States Senate.
