Review:

Esther Gold is now thirteen. She has always prided herself on taking the Halloween night ritual of collecting candy seriously. She also took making her annual costumes, three each year, seriously. She was also the only Jewish kid in her grade, being Jewish was unimportant but important and hard to explain but she felt it. This year her parents felt she was too old for costumes and trick-or-treating. With the help of her best friend Augustin, she managed to participate in her favorite holiday’s neighborhood festivities.

This year’s Halloween will have the first full moon in nineteen years. It was also the first time that Esther started seeing strange things and felt a little strange about Halloween. She encountered an odd women dressed in vintage Victorian with children following her in old and tattered costumes. Not to mention the two sinister brothers driving ice cream trucks. This Halloween season had plenty of strange things happening to her neighborhood. When the adults fell into a deep sleep and her little sister was missing there were only a few people that she could turn to, her best friend, her school nemesis, and the neighborhood dentist. How will she and the others conquer the weirdness of Halloween?

Author Joseph Fink has set the scene for the perfect creepy read with adventure and bravery. Readers will root for the characters to smash the bad guys. This fun read could be a classroom read-a-loud, or a cozy read by a lamp.
