Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2020 (1/31/20) is in its 7th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those book into the hands of young readers and educators.

Seven years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues.

Title: Little Frida

Review:

Frida Kahlo was a famous artist whose work was known around the world. In this story, author Anthony Browne provides readers with insight of Frida as a child with a disability that left her feeling isolated.

When Frida was only six years old, she had polio and the kids would call her peg-leg. She tried to hide it, but it didn’t work. She was different and she knew it. She was viewed as an outsider. To pass the time and spend time with her father the photographer, Frida would color in his black and white photos. Frida always dreamt of flying and her imagination would take her soaring into the sky. On her seventh birthday she received a pair of wings and was very disappointed. With her new wings, Frida created an imaginary world she escaped to whenever she wanted. In this world she made a friend who was a dancer. She could be herself around this friend and that made her happy. Curiously, her friend looked a lot like her. When she wasn’t with her friend, she painted pictures of her.

Autor Anthony Browne, a former British Children’s Laureate, was inspired to create this story after having read Frida Kahlo’s library. He thought it was important to provide your readers insight regarding her imagination and the colorful world she created to escape her loneliness. Parents and teachers can use this guide to show how an artist bloomed after having such a difficult childhood. It is also the perfect tool for discussing loneliness, illnesses and polio.
