Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2020 (1/31/20) is in its 7th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those book into the hands of young readers and educators.
Seven years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues.

Title: Journey To Jo’Burg
Author: Beverley Naidoo

ISBN: 9780062881793
Review:
Naledi and Tiro have a baby
sister who is very sick with fever. They need to get help, but their mother is working
in Johannesburg which is 300 kilometers away. With the help of a friend to keep
an eye on their family home, the two set out for their long walk for help. A new
friend they met helped them get food and shelter. A familiar friend helped them
by allowing them to ride in the back of a truck. It seemed that they may make
it to Johannesburg quicker than expected. What will happen when they get there?
Will they find their Mma in time?
Author Beverly Naidoo has
written a story to share the experiences of life in South Africa. This story is
a quick read but engaging and share bits of real life. Young readers can learn
about the culture of the villagers. Parents and teachers can discuss with kids’
life in America versus what other kids might experience in their native lands.
